While press coverage of Administration efforts to shutdown USAID have  centered on whenther the President has the authority to take such action, there is a much bigger question: How does the abandonment of U.S. efforts to care for the hungry and homeless around the world square with American values?  How do American’s of various faiths view our taking away more than half of the sustenance now provided to worlds poorest and most vulnerable humanbeings?

The Bible, the holy book of more than 90 percent of Americans who say they have a religious affiliation, seems completely unambiguious on this question. Here is a sampling of the dozens upon dozens of Biblical verses that address the importance of providing food, shelter and comfort to the poor.
